Dr. Steven Webb, MD and Dr. John DePeri, MD are now the first and only surgeons in the region to perform a biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch (BPD/DS). The robotic procedure is considered the most effective surgical option for morbidly obese patients. While weight-loss procedures have been performed for many years, there are only few centers in the United States that perform the BPD/DS using the surgical robot.

“My partner and I are proud to offer our patients a newer, more advanced approach to help them overcome obesity and improve their quality of life,” said Memorial Advanced Surgery Physician Dr. Steven Webb. “For many years, we’ve performed a variety of weight-loss procedures using the surgical robot. Recently, we modified our approach so this complex procedure can also be performed robotically, allowing for increased visual capability and improved precision and accuracy.”

Unlike the laparoscopic or open approaches, the robotic-assisted technique allows the surgeon to have more range of motion and more dexterity. In addition, it provides the surgeon with a three-dimensional view and higher magnification.

Benefits include:

  • Less pain
  • Less scarring
  • Less blood loss
  • Shorter hospital stay
  • Faster recovery
  • Quicker return to normal activities

In addition to the laparoscopic and robotic approaches of the biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch (BPD/DS), the Memorial Bariatric Surgery Center offers patients the Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass (Laparoscopic, Robotic), the Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy (Laparoscopic, Robotic) and the adjustable Gastric Banding (Laparoscopic). In addition, our surgeons perform complex revisional procedures.
