Orange Park Medical Center has once again earned the highest quality cardiac surgery rating (3-Star) from the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS), with a quality score of 98.1%.
The Society of Thoracic Surgeons has developed a comprehensive rating system for the quality of cardiac surgery amongst hospitals across the country. Approximately13.4% of hospitals with a cardiac program received the “3 star” rating, which denotes the highest category in quality. In the most current analysis of national data covering the period from July 1, 2012 through June 31, 2013, the cardiac surgery performance of our hospital was found to lie in this highest quality tier, thereby receiving an STS 3-Star rating. For the same year, 9.7% of all hospitals received a “1-Star” rating and 76.9% received a “2-Star” rating.
“Obtaining a 3-Star Rating for the second year in a row in only our second year of operation is a testament to the continued dedication of our team and their focus on quality care,” said medical director, Nathan Bates, M.D., F.A.C.S. “I am proud of what this achievement means to our program, hospital and, most importantly, our patients.”
Categories taken into consideration include major complications, risk-adjusted mortality rate, prolonged intubation time, sternal wound infection, medication and length of stay. Along with these extraordinary outcomes, Orange Park’s average post-coronary bypass length of stay is 4.8 days when compared to 6.9 days for the other 1,070 participating hospitals across the country.
Since beginning the program in December 2010, Orange Park’s cardiac surgical team has performed more than 400 open heart surgeries. Along with cardiothoracic surgery, Orange Park has been nationally recognized for top quality performance in heart failure, chest pain, stroke and echocardiography.
